The study of animals, in this case the insects, can bring benefit to the management of crops, because it reduces the use of pesticides, contributing to the quality of the product. To illustrate the importance of zoological knowledge, we can mention the technique based on biological control, which is the use of natural enemies to control insectivorous pests. The application of this method is intrinsically linked to the knowledge of the trophic ecology of the species involved.
For example:
- There is an aphid (Aphis gossypii Glover) infesting cotton crops in the Federal District. In a study by EMBRAPA (2005), could be seen that species of ladybugs can be used to control populations of this species of aphid. The use of biological control has many advantages such as reduced spending by low consumption of insecticide and low implementation cost, absence of harmful effects to human health and no development of resistance to natural enemies as with chemicals.
